Thirty wheat cultivars, along with 3 susceptible controls, were uniformly sprayed with groups 12, 77, 104, 108 and 162 of the virulent pathotypes of Puccinia recondita f.sp. tritici in a field experiment conducted in Mahabaleshwar, Maharashtra, India during the rabi seasons of 1996-97. In susceptible cultivars, flecks of infection were observed within a week. The initial average coefficient of infection in the cultivars tested ranged from 0.8 to 20.
