Himekomatsu, Pinus parviflora, is naturally distributed in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, Japan, and is ecologically a southern type. A related variety, P. parviflora var. pentaphylla, evolved as a northern ecotype in response to climate change after the Pleistocene. Recently, himekomatsu stands have declined remarkably on Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture. Results are given of a study on the actual conditions of the decline and natural regeneration of seedlings in forest at Shiroji-sawa in Chiba.
