During the last 20 years, advances in equine reproductive medicine have led to an appreciable increase in the per cycle pregnancy rate and a dramatic fall in the incidence of abortion due to twin pregnancy. On the other hand, the rate of early pregnancy loss (EPL) has altered little, and EPL remains a poorly understood but significant cause of economic loss to the breeding industry.
