The oral administration of the extract of W. coagulans fruits (obtained from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India) in 0.5% Tween-80 significantly lowered the blood glucose levels of fasted and glucose-fed normal Wistar rats, compared to the controls, given 0.5% Tween-80. The fruit extract did not show hypoglycaemic effects in alloxan-treated diabetic rats. The doses used did not show acute toxicity or any variation in behavioural patterns.
