Effect of elevated CO2 on lignification of young poplar (Populus x canescens (Ait.) SM)

Two-week-old seedlings were grown for 3 months under ambient (360 p.p.m.) and elevated (700 p.p.m.) CO2 levels. Higher CO2 resulted in significant increases in biomass production. Studies of lignification patterns showed that the elongation zone of the stem, in addition to bark and leaves, contained lower lignin concentrations in trees grown under elevated CO2 conditions. The reductions were accompanied by corresponding decreases in ionically bound peroxidase activities.
