Effect of etephon (CEPA) on the growth dynamics of seed stalk of onion (Allium cepa L.)

The effects of etephon on the growth of onion cultivars Kristine, Fiesta, Efekt, Kutnowsaka, and Wolska were studied in Poznan, Poland, during 1997-99. Etephon (0.07 g per plant) was sprayed when stalks were 20-25 cm high. Spraying of etephon reduced stalk height by 43.3 in Fiesta and by 49.5% in Efekt, but did not significantly affect the stalks of Kristine. Unsprayed and sprayed stalks exhibited two types of growth pattern. In the first type, rapid growth was observed from 10.00 to 22.00 h.
