In the Asian subtropics, sugarcane is an important commercial crop, but sugar productivity per se is rather low, in spite of the introduction of improved cane cultivars and better agri-management practices. The full genetic potential of these improved cultivars cannot be realized due to many biotic and abiotic stresses that impede growth and sugar accumulation.
