The effect of different forecrops, i.e. buckwheat, white mustard tansy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) and rye, on growth and root yield of American ginseng (P. quinquefolius) was investigated in a 4-year (1995-99) experiment conducted on a sandy loam soil in Poland. The best conditions for growth of American ginseng were observed when buckwheat and white mustard were used as forecrops.
