Field experiments were conducted during 1993/94 and 1994/95 on a Parbhani clay soil (Vertisol) in Maharashtra, India. Two planting patterns (normal and paired) and four irrigation schedules were used in the study (irrigation at 40% evapotranspiration (ET), 60, 80 and 100% ET).
