The ecological and soil hydraulic effects of silvicultural conversion from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) to beech (Fagus sylvatica) stands in the northeastern lowlands of Germany were investigated. With regard to water budget and flood prevention at the scale of forest catchments, the influences of changes in tree species composition on soil organic matter dynamics and water retention in the forest floor are discussed. The water holding capacity is linked to the volume of soil organic matter.
