Efficacy of imidacloprid applied in nursery against leaf folder and stem borer in rice

The effectiveness of different treatments with imidacloprid 200 SL in reducing the incidence of the leaf folder (Cnaphalocrocis medinalis) and the stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas) in rice was evaluated in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India The treatments comprised sprouted seed soaking in 0.05% imidacloprid 200 SL for 3 h before sowing, sprouted seed soaking+drenching in 7.5 g a.i. imidacloprid 200 SL/ha at 5 days before planting (DBP), soil application of 25.0 and 37.5 g a.i. imidacloprid 200 SL/ha at 10 DBP, and foliar application of 25.0 and 37.5 g a.i. imidacloprid 200 SL/ha at 5 DBP. Carbofuran 3 G at 1.5 g a.i./ha at 5 DBP and an untreated treatment were used as controls. Sprouted seed soaking in 0.05% imidacloprid 200 SL for 3 h before sowing resulted in a good protection against leaf folder than other treatments. The percentage of damaged leaves under this treatment was only 3.6 and 4.8% at 45 and 60 days after transplantation (DAT), respectively. Foliar application of 25 g a.i. imidacloprid 200 SL/ha at 5 DBP was found effective up to 30 DAT in reducing stem borer incidence. Soil application of 37.5 g a.i. imidacloprid 200 SL/ha at 10 DBP increased the incidence of stem borer at both 30 and 40 DAT. Foliar spray of imidacloprid 200 SL at a higher concentration (37.5 g a.i./ha) recorded much higher population of stem borer.
