Enhanced value products from agaroids

Enhanced value products from agaroids

Proceedings of the 17th International Seaweed Symposium, Cape Town, South Africa, 28 January 2 February 2001: 213-220

The problem of obtaining higher-valued products from seaweed is discussed in terms of marketing and engineering, using the case of Pterocladia lucida as an example. The engineering and economic aspects of agar extraction are considered from a pilot plant and a proposed production plant in New Zealand, and the conditions required to extract a further product (such as agarose) are defined.
