Evaluation of on-farm soil fertility research in the rainfed lowland rice fields of Sukumaland, Tanzania

Experimental Agriculture 39(1): 65-79

The first ever on-farm soil fertility research in the rainfed lowland rice (Oryza sativa) fields of Sukumaland, in northwest Tanzania, was carried out between 1990 and 1996 in response to farmers' complaints about declining rice yields. From diagnosis to extension, the research approach followed that of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT).
