Experimental studies on congenital transmission of Schistosoma japonicum

Experimental studies on congenital transmission of Schistosoma japonicum

Chinese Journal of Schistosomiasis Control 14(1): 25-27

To determine the maternal transmission of S. japonicum, female rabbits at different stages of pregnancy were infected with different doses of S. japonicum cercariae. A challenge infection was also done for prenatal infected rabbits. In middle and late pregnancy, 13.5 and 46.7% of newborn rabbits were infected, respectively. The infection rates of newborn rabbits, whose mothers were infected at late pregnancy with 300, 500 and 700 cercariae, were 46.7, 61.9 and 79.0%, respectively.
