First records of the genera Eimeria and Isospora (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) obtained from feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) alien species in Japan and prevalence of serum antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii among the raccoons

First records of the genera Eimeria and Isospora (Protozoa: Eimeriidae) obtained from feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) alien species in Japan and prevalence of serum antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii among the raccoons

Japanese Journal of Zoo and Wildlife Medicine 7(1): 87-90

Coccidian oocysts were obtained from 13 of 260 feral raccoons (Procyon lotor) examined in Hokkaido, Japan. Among them, Eimeria procyonis and Isospora ohioensis were identified. These are the first records of the genus Eimeria from feral raccoons alien species in Japan, and of I. ohioensis from the raccoon. Furthermore, prevalence of seropositive reactions to Toxoplasma gondii was studied by latex-agglutination test, and 13.5-15.0% of 248 raccoons were positive.
