Genetic gain in agronomic traits in common bean breeding

An experiment was conducted in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, during 4 growing seasons to estimate the genetic gain for grain yield and other important breeding traits of common bean. The annual mean genetic gain for grain yield was 0.88%, which corresponded to 18.07 kg ha-1 year-1. Genetic loss was verified in grain tegument colour, height of first and final pod insertion.
