Genetic parameters estimates of Portuguese dairy cows lactation curves using splines

Data used were 53 750 test day milk yields from 5375 first lactating cows recorded in 497 herds. A spline animal model was fitted, including as fixed effects the age at calving and the herd-test-month. Model fitting was carried out using ASREML. The heritability at DIM 17 was 0.17, fell to 0.16 in the following 2 tests, and after increased to the maximum estimated value of 0.28 in DIM 291. Genetic correlations were higher than the phenotypic ones.
