In order to elucidate the effects of management systems on the existing potential of biodiversity the genetic variation of silver fir (Abies alba) in uneven-aged forests (Plenter forests) and even-aged forests (Altersklassenwald), in Bavaria, was investigated by means of isoenzyme gene-markers at 14 to 16 gene loci. In total, approximately 3300 adult silver firs in 9 Plenter forests and 16 even-aged forests in Switzerland, Baden-Wurttemberg (Germany) and Bavaria (Germany) were examined.
