Green forage, pasture feeding or total mixed ration (TMR) in summer feeding of high-yielding dairy cows

Green forage from fodder growing and permanent grassland is suitable for summer feeding of cows. However it contains insufficient nutrients to meet the requirements of high-yielding cows. Supplementation of feeds with concentrates decreases dry matter intake from green forage. When milk yield is over 25 kg daily per cow the TMR system should be used, even in summer feeding. Green forage, harvested during the optimal growth stage, should be preserved by ensiling.
