This paper examines the potential of ecotourism as a tool for promoting conservation and community development, based on a comparative study in Costa Rica. Study findings were mixed regarding ecotourism's effectiveness as a conservation and community development tool. Survey respondents saw legal restrictions as more influential than tourism in prompting declines in deforestation and hunting rates.
