This paper argues that the heightened interest in ecotourism as a result of the publicity surrounding the International Year of Ecotourism (IYE), could have a significant impact on the livelihoods of indigenous communities. It is contended that the social and cultural impacts of ecotourism on indigenous and local communities must be weighed equally with environmental impacts.
