An experiment on the integrated use of nitrogen was conducted in Maharashtra, India, during 1999-2000 to determine its effect on the productivity of a sorghum (cv. CSH-9)-wheat (cv. HD-2189) cropping system. During kharif, treatment combinations comprised: 30, 60, 90 or 120 kg N (through urea)/ha, 10, 20 or 30 kg farmyard manure/ha, 10, 20 or 30 kg compost/ha, 10, 20 or 30 kg vermicompost/ha and/or biological nitrogen fixers (BNFs; Acetobacter, Azotobacter and Azospirillum).
