The development of the leaves and stems of winter wheat Iwainodaichi and spring wheat Chikugoizumi, sown early in the southwestern part of Japan, and its relationship with leaf and stem heteroblasty were analysed. The leaf position at which the leaf length increased rapidly, was higher in Iwainodaichi than in Chikugoizumi when sown early, although no significant differences were observed between the two cultivars in terms of the parameter measured under standard sowing.
