Long-term dynamics of Lake Balaton's chironomid fauna and its dependence on the phytoplankton production

Long-term changes in Lake Balaton's benthic chironomid communities and the primary production are described, based on previous and original studies. Lake Balaton underwent a rapid man-made eutrophication during the 1970s and 1980s, and started to recover only recently. Chironomid communities were dominated by Procladius cf. choreus, Tanypus punctipennis and Chironomus balatonicus. Abundance and dominance relationships of chironomids showed significant spatio-temporal variations. The importance of primary production in the regulation of chironomid communities is discussed. Positive correlation was found between the mean late summer chlorophyll-a concentration and the biomass of chironomids with one year delay. Biomass and production of Ch. balatonicus showed positive and that of T. punctipennis negative correlation with the primary production. However, biomass and production of P. cf. choreus seemed to be independent from the primary production. During 1997-99 chironomids assimilated 1.1-1.3% and 2.4-3.2% of the primary production in the Tihany- and Keszthely basins, respectively. The background of this large regional difference in energy transfer efficiency from the phytoplankton to chironomids is discussed.
