Management of oriental yellow scale insects (Aonidiella orientalis Newstead) (Homoptera: Diaspididae) on neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) (Meliaceae) in West Africa

Entomology in the Nigerian economy Research focus in the 21st century: 1-10

Scale insects belonging to the family Diaspididae have been reported on neem in Cameroun, Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Mali. All five countries have made various attempts to manage the pest. This paper takes a look at the management options adopted by these countries and the level of success and sustainability. Management options were classified into two categories, viz, mechanical cultural and chemical. In general, none of these options was successful or sustainable.
