Ten sugarcane cultivars, namely C 266-70, B-77-418, CB 44-52, Ja 60-5, C 1324-74, C 1389-74, C 1051-73, C 120-78, UCLV 103-84 and UCLV 32-83, from the agroindustrial complex 'Hector Molina' (located south of Havana, Cuba) were compared and characterized using some classical growth parameters, such as leaf area and production of shoot dry matter, and measures of some growth indexes, such as speed of production, duration of biomass and leaf area, rate of net assimilation and relative growth aerial parts. Other aspects evaluated were relative water and proline content in the leaves. The results indicated that the main differences among cultivars are manifested during growth and not in the early stages of crop development. There was no direct relationship between the relative water content and proline content in all cultivars. The speed of dry matter production, the rate of net assimilation and the rate of relative growth were the growth indexes that best reflected the differences in performance among the sugarcane cultivars.
