10 P. carinii-infected red-bellied tamarins and 66 cynomolgus monkeys were examined postmortem. The mitochondrial large subunit mitochondrial RNA gene (mt LSU rRNA) of the P. carinii derived from the 2 species were analysed. Polymerase chain reaction product fragments of the P. carinii mt LSU rRNA from tamarins and cynomolgus monkeys were 315 bp and 307 bp, respectively. Genetic diversity in P. carinii DNA was found in both types of monkeys.
