Remote sensing analysis on land use of a tidal delta in the Yoshino river estuary in Japan - combatting against salinity by ponding irrigation and sand dressing

Land use of a low flat delta surrounded by four tidal rivers and sea (Kawauchi district located in the estuary of the Yoshino River, Japan) was analyzed using Landsat data. Although flood and seawater damage have been severe, fresh water from wells, ponds and rivers is still sufficiently good quality for drinking and irrigation. However, saline water has been displacing the fresh groundwater since mid-1940s because of land subsidence (1946 earthquake) and industrial over-pumping.
