Studies on the fertility and sexual compatibility of the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Sacc) and its implications in the development of lasting resistance in rice varieties for Colombia

Studies on the fertility and sexual compatibility of the fungus Pyricularia grisea (Sacc) and its implications in the development of lasting resistance in rice varieties for Colombia

Fitopatologia Colombiana 24(1/2): 55-60

The pathogenic variability and sexual reproduction of P. grisea on rice and weeds was investigated to determine the breeding implications in the development of blast resistance. Sexual reproduction was not possible in the population of P. grisea studied, indicating that this mechanism has no significant role in generating pathogenic variability. The lack of the sexual stage implies that accumulation of virulence genes specific to certain resistance genes is probably low.
