The study was carried out within the region of Zhangye city, Gansu province, northwest China. The sampling area consisted of two geographic areas, i.e. midsection of the northern slope of Qilian mountain forest-grassland area and Zhangye desert-oasis area, with altitudes ranging from 1450 m to 3700 m.
