The response, N uptake and associated depletion of soil nitrate of six winter wheat varieties were studied using the nitrogen response index (NRI), which is the determined value of nitrogen-fertilized treatment divided by the determined value of a non-N fertilizer treatment. Results indicated that the NRI differences for dry matter production, N concentration and N uptake rate were significant among varieties even after N fertilizer addition. The NRI of straw was higher than that of grain.
