The effect of clonal rootstocks on leaf mineral composition of several apple cultivars

The effects of six clonal rootstocks (M9, M26, M27, MM106, MM111 and Mg) of leaf minerals composition (N, P, K, Mg, Mn, Zn, and Fe) of four commercial apples, 'Red Delicious', 'Golden Smoothy', 'Golab Kohanz' and 'Shafeeabadi' (the last two are Iranian varieties) were examined in Iran Cultivars themselves had significant differences in leaves N, Mg and Fe concentrations. 'Shafeeabadi' had highest N concentration, 'Golden Smoothy' and 'Red Delicious' had higher Mg concentration than 'Golab Kohanz' and 'Shafeeabadi'. The highest Fe concentration was found in the leaves of 'Golab Kohanz'. Rootstocks had significant effects on leaves N, K, Mg and Mn concentrations. Trees on M9 and MM106 had the highest leave N and K concentrations and the lowest amount of these two elements was found in the leaves of trees grafted on M27 rootstock. Trees on M27 and M26 had highest Mg and Mn concentration, respectively, and the lowest amount of these two elements was found with MM111 rootstocks. The highest P, Zn and Fe concentration of leaves was found on B9 but there was no significant difference between B9 and the other rootstocks. There were positive correlations between N and K concentrations of leaves and tree growth, while correlations between Mg and Mn concentrations and tree growth was negative and the less vigorous rootstocks had higher accumulation of these two elements. Rootstocks had the significant effect on leaves Mn concentration and their concentrations changed strongly along with the change of rootstock.
