Structure and yield were studied at 7 and 12 yr old in stands of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) planted in Hungary (trial Nemetker 87A) at 3 spacings: 2.4x1.0, 2.4x0.7 and 1.0x1.0 m. A strong correlation was found between the number of stems per hectare and the mean volume of stems (r2 = 0.788), and between the reduction of the number of stems per hectare by thinning and the changes in the mean stem volume (r2 = 0.853).
