Atropa belladonna contains tropane alkaloids. The major alkaloids have anticholinergic activity. Hairy root cultures of A. belladonna were established by transformation with Agrobacterium rhizogenes R1601. Nine clones of them were employed to study the growth and the production and content of atropine and scopolamine on both solid and liquid media. Mg2+ has an important role in the universal and special metabolism of cells.
