The effects of sowing date and sowing rate on the performance of winter barley 'Moldavskij 16' were investigated on sandy loam Endocalcari-Endohypogleyic cambisols at the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture during 1997-2000. Winter barley seeds were sown on 1, 10, 20 and 30 September at 300, 400, 500 and 600 m-2. The highest number of productive stems was obtained with sowing on 1 September. The delay in sowing resulted in a decrease in the number of stems.
