Investigation of the thinning effect on development, stability and functions of birch (Betula sp.) and blue spruce (Picea pungens) substitute stands began in 1989 in air polluted areas in the Ore Mts. (Northern Bohemia), Czech Republic. Attention was paid to two types of thinning: negative selection from below and positive selection from above, both compared to control plot without thinning. Experimental treatment started in 1990 when the stands were 9 years old.
