Photosynthesis, the xanthophyll cycle, light energy dissipation and downregulation of photosystem II (PSII) in senescent leaves of wheat (cv. Beijing 3348) plants sown in a field in Beijing, China on 2 October 1999 were investigated. With the progress of senescence, maximum efficiency of PSII photochemistry decreased only slightly early in the morning but substantially at midday.
