A new approach to overcome the waterlogging and salinity problems in the Aral Sea Basin

The paper describes how the 2.5Mha increase in annual irrigated area has progressively increased in the Aral Sea Basin. The increased salinity of the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, especially in their lower reaches, is due to the increasing salinity in drainage water discharge from irrigated lands. The salinity of return drainwater in the upper reaches is 1500-3000 mg/l, in the middle reaches 3500-6000 mg/l and in the lower reaches 5000-7000 mg/l.
