A study was conducted to determine lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) in drinking water samples from various locations in Tokat region of Turkey using flame atomic absorption spectrometry after preconcentration procedure with Chromosorb 106 resin. Pb in drinking water may be due to the use of Pb pipes or plastic pipes stabilized with Pb compounds. The Pb concentration range was 3.1-7.7 micro g/l. The highest Pb level was found in the drinking water sample from the industrial area of Tokat City. The mean level of Pb in the drinking water samples from Tokat-Turkey was 4.85 micro g/l, which is below the permitted levels. Cd may enter surface waters as a consequence of industrial, mining and smelting operations. Metal and plastic pipes constitute additional possible source. The mean level of Cd in the drinking water samples from Tokat-Turkey was 2.58 micro g/l. Cd concentrations were found to be below the detection limit. The highest Cd level in drinking water samples from Tokat was found in the sample from the industrial area of Tokat City (4.2+or-0.3 micro g/l).
