Changes in the nun moth (Lymantria monacha L., Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) population abundance in an inter-outbreak period in pine forests of north-western Poland

Changes in the nun moth (Lymantria monacha L., Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) population abundance in an inter-outbreak period in pine forests of north-western Poland

Folia Forestalia Polonica Seria A, Lesnictwo (46): 29-38

In the years 1989-1998, studies on the changes in male nun moth (Lymantria monacha L.) number at low-density populations were carried out in pine stands located in north-western Poland. The entire study area covered about 400 hectares. The size of the nun moth population was estimated on the basis of male moth counts in pheromone-baited traps. High differences in nun moth densities were found both among successive years of the study period and control points. The first years of observations showed that the population dynamics pattern was evidently synchronic while in the final phase of the study these changes were asynchronic. This pattern can suggest the likelihood of the nun moth outbreak is declining.
