The history of Czech sugar beet cultivation after 1945 is presented: the devastating effect of World War 2 on the availability of agricultural labour, followed by mass collectivization after the communist takeover, meant that small growers all but disappeared and heavy machinery could be used on increasingly large fields; by 1975, 95.9% of land was farmed by large agricultural collectives.
