Characteristics of the dwarf shrub and herb layer of pine forest under the conditions of industrial air pollution (Kola peninsula)

Characteristics of the dwarf shrub and herb layer of pine forest under the conditions of industrial air pollution (Kola peninsula)

Rastitel' nye Resursy 39(4): 20-35

The dwarf shrub and herb layer of the pine (Pinus sylvestris) forest, which has been under industrial (smelter) air pollution in Kola Peninsula, Russia, was studied. The total cover decreased two- to three-fold compared to the background. Eight kilometres from the smelter, a proportion of Vaccinium vitis-idaea dropped from 30% to a fraction in contrast to Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, in which its proportion increased up to 70 and 40% in the lichen and moss site type, respectively.
