Combining ability analysis on maize inbred lines

Thirteen inbred lines of maize including 2321, Mengxi, d48C and Y137, were used in an incomplete diallel cross of 8 x 5 creating 40 hybrid combinations. All 40 hybrid combinations and their parents were sown in field plots in Jiangyang in the summer of 2001. The inbred lines 2321, 212B, 4H-1B3, 5H-113 and Y137 showed a high general combining ability (GCA). The combinations Y137 x 5H-113, Monxi x H3-1A, T123 x 5H-113, 2321 x 212B and 9921 x 5H-1A1 showed a high specific combining ability (SCA).
