Combining ability in maize races bred by limited backcross. I. Agronomic traits

General (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities for 10 agronomic traits were evaluated in 10 maize populations. Diallel crosses were developed from 10 landraces bred using the limited backcross method (RC1-F7), then grown under irrigated conditions in 3 locations in Mexico. Data were analysed based on Griffing's Model 2. Combining ability was reduced, most particularly the SCA. Convergence towards the commercial plant type was observed. The 45 crosses and their parents had similar yields.
