The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of common mental disorders and its association with social support in a community located in the Zona da Mata, a sugar cane plantation area in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. A household survey was carried out and the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), the Medical Outcomes Study, and socioeconomic questions were administered to all residents aged >19 years. The overall prevalence of common mental disorders was 36.0%.
