Composition of the essential oil of cultivated Salvia guaranitica from Uruguay

Composition of the essential oil of cultivated Salvia guaranitica from Uruguay

Flavour and Fragrance Journal 20(4): 421-424

The essential oil of aerial parts of Salvia guaranitica, grown in a small-scale experimental field in Uruguay, was analysed by GC, GC-MS and C-13-NMR; 49 constituents (86.6% of the total sample) were identified. The major components were found to be sesquiterpene hydrocarbons: germacrene D (25.0%), beta-elemene (20.0%), beta-caryophyllene (8.8%) and beta-bourbonene (6.2%), whereas monoterpenes only reached 4% of the sample analysed.
