Composition of volatile oil of Syzygium aromaticum buds

A steam-distilled essential oil obtained from buds of Syzygium aromaticum was characterized by a high percentage of oxygenated monoterpenes (53.2%) dominated by myrtenone (49.1%) and pulegone (4.1%). The oil contained three sesquiterpenes (approximately 10%), which consisted of beta -caryophyllene (8.7%), alpha -humulene (1.1%) and caryophyllene oxide (1%).
