Maize hybrid SC 704 plants were supplied with 0, 92, 184 or 276 kg N/ha and subjected to optimum irrigation or water stress during the milky or dough stage. Water stress during the milky and dough stages significantly reduced the grain yield and 1000-kernel weight. The highest grain yield was recorded with the application of 276 kg N/ha. Water stress resulted in the highest water use efficiency during the milky stage.
