Irradiation of packaging materials (in most cases plastics) generally leads to a formation of free radicals and ions, with secondary effects such as cross-linking as well as oxidative chain scission. As a consequence, radiolysis products are generated which may induce off-odors in the packaging polymers as well as changes in migration characteristics.
