The cockroach P. americana contains in its digestive tract an acidic (pH 5.0) and mesophilic (50 degrees C) alpha -glucosidase. This enzyme, purified to homogeneity, highly hydrolyses maltose, sucrose and p-nitrophenyl- alpha -D-glucopyranoside. The ability of alpha -glucosidase from cockroach purified to homogeneity to catalyse transglucosylation reactions was tested using maltose and saccharose as glucosyl donors and 2-phenylethanol and phenol as acceptors.
